Freedom From Eating Disorders
Posted on: July 8th, 2015
The recent July 4th holiday has most of us reflecting on how our ancestors rejected oppressive British rule and fought hard to establish a free and independent America, but the holiday also has me thinking about another type of freedom.
A large part of my practice is devoted to helping patients free themselves from eating disorders which are debilitating to the point that the patient feels trapped or controlled by the disorder.
While each disorder has distinct, complex symptoms, there is a common element to all of them – eating disorders disrupt the balance in a person’s life. Over time, if left untreated, they take a serious psychological and physical toll. As the disorder progresses, it slowly erodes the person’s ability to function in their life and often will cause them to isolate from family and friends.
The good news is that eating disorders are treatable. An abundance of research supports that those suffering with eating disorders can get relief from symptoms and even overcome them. To do so, it’s critical they seek professional help, and the earlier they seek help the better the outcome.
Once people are receiving proper treatment, their symptoms diminish and slowly their lives come back into balance. In the last phase of treatment patients realize the eating disorder no longer controls them and with that comes a profound sense of freedom.
